Running Through my Veins
After looking through my curation of compiled images, I searched for things that interested me, that formed a connection and allowed me to see a potential. The first two images that came to me was a shot of interwoven branches in the foreground of a sunset and a simple hand. The final art has been created with layered images and a repetition of the hand. It takes the searching of the eyes to put together the true content of the forested landscape. Through its imagery the art has prominently brought forward elements of colour and shape, that contribute to the complete composition.
Creating the image required experimentation and various tools from photoshop that would allow blending and combining. I began by using a simple image of a hand, as I felt it carried mood. By creating an selection I was able to turn the hand into a more versatile shape. The created frame was put onto the background image, and area around was filled with an appropriate, transparent color. To continue the experimentation I created replicas of the hand, all with different form, opacity, and placement until I was pleased with the finished art. As I worked and then looked upon the finished piece, the branches of the trees reminded me of the veins underneath our skin.
As I look upon the image, it provokes an idea of what is inside you, what makes you who you are, whatever is pumping through your blood getting an external representation past the surface that is seen. It is an emotion of yearning, for want.
Mirror of the Soul
The choice to work with an eye was interesting. When I initial shot the photo, I was exposed to the tone that come through from such an ordinary part of ourselves. A sense we depend on, that gives is our perception of the world. Manipulating the eye comes with a chance for unfamiliarity and unusual results. However I was relying on this mood when creating the image, I wanted the viewer to truly see and to truly feel. The image is a simpler double exposure product, but unique from what I had seen. As I was faced with the decision as to what photo to combine I chose those that truly said something to me. The choice of the flowers came as I found the contrast striking and the imagery of the purest, white petals against the darkness they emerged from resonated with myself. The final image came after many trials, and experiments as to what would complement the blending best. The use of layer masks was crucial in the editing process.
I am very content with how the final image came out, as I was able to reach the goal of representing a personal relevance and evoking feeling. This became clear as the final image took form. I have always seen eyes as something more than a sense. The eyes may let us see the world, however they reflect what is inside as well. Communicating more than can come from the spoken word. Your tongue may lie but the eyes are truly the window of truth into one's inner workings. They are the mirrors of the soul.
Trapped Within
The images I chose to combine for this double exposure photo were chosen out of pure curiosity and want for experimentation. The subject matter of this piece consists of a chain, lock and a portrait of a face. I titled the image “Trapped Within” for not just the composition that you see but the connection that is provoked to the viewer. When coming up for the themes and meaning for each of the Double Exposure pictures I didn't just base it off of my view but got the opinions of many others to really narrow down what it could reflect. In the final work relevant elements I notice are shapes, balance, and contrast.
To get to this final image I started with a photo of a chain, and a portrait of a girl mostly focused on the eyes. After initial editing I decided to turn the chains into the main focus by removing all of the background and replacing it with a light grey colour. Next using layer masks I was able to maintain the shape of the chain while seeing the face through. After getting to this point however I wanted to continue experimentation. I played with many different tools, layer orders, and blending modes to arrive at the finish piece which I feel best reflected my goal of presenting a mood.
In my finished piece I believe that it shows a feeling of being isolated and trapped. The chains that bound us in life are many times metaphorical and personal to our own lives.
