Each of the photographs in this series have come from experimentation with the ideas of reflection. The photographs all have a unique perspective and look to them. The first one titled “Desolate Void” shows a hand and its reflection. The majority of the picture, excluding the subject of a hand is dark. In the photo the idea of space, shape and light are significant in creating the overall piece. When taking the photo I worked with one light and a large mirror. I think the simplicity of the process and composition led to an interesting result. When I planned to take this photo I did not have an idea of composition, and lighting for the photo. However I did plan to portray a mysterious, dark mood. I think the use of reflection in the image does help to create this atmosphere in the photograph. The second photo is titled fragmented. Taking this photo involved more development in the process. I experimented with the material I used, the subject and different angles. While doing this I was intrigued by this style of the photograph, where the focus was drawn to the reflection in the mirror. The shallow depth of field in the image, the shape of mirror fragment and my choice of leaving only the reflection in colour all contributed to an interesting photo. I think the mood and idea behind this photo ties back in with the previous one, it is mysterious and shows a sense of secrecy in the way that the subjects face is portrayed. The third photo, was something that was different than most photographs I take and really allowed me manipulate what is being seen through reflection. I titled the photo shattered, as although it may not be obvious to the viewer The picture taken is of a shattered mirror reflecting the branches of a tree. I found it interesting that when taking this picture the camera would allow me to focus on the cracks of the mirror or what was being reflected. I chose to include this picture in this series as I find it matches with the mysterious mood throughout the series. It also is very interesting for a viewer to look at and attempt to comprehend. When I did this photo challenge my goal was to manipulate the idea of reflection and see what I could create from it and I think it I was able to achieve that. The photo challenge has also shown me what can come from taking a step out of your comfort zone and trying out new approaches to photography.
