Macro photography was an interesting photographic technique to pursue as it was unlike anything I had done before. Simply changing the lens allowed me to explore taking photos in a very different perspective. As I experimented with this technique, I decided I wanted my series to explore using a person as the subject. I feel that my interest for attempting this series was greatly inspired by my work throughout the year, and in a new way I wanted to use macro photography to capture what was familiar. Taking on this series was a challenge as photographing my subjects, whether it was eyes or hands required precision in focus and composing the subject to make it look interesting. With my subject it was easy to take a photo that was lacking in depth and therefore it required constant experimentation and changes to angles, lighting and focus to obtain a dynamic shot.
Although it may have been a challenge, I enjoyed the process that went into capturing the photos. Using such a powerful and unique lens also made capturing the photos an engaging experience.
In the series each photo has it own individual characteristic, formed from the varying angles and approaches. However it is the subject matter and process that ties them together as a series.
As mentioned before, the series that I have created has been deeply inspired by my collection of photographic work. I have developed an interest in using a face or a person in my photos, and capturing it in a way that makes the viewer feel and think about the subject. As a photographer, it is like revealing something that is concealed from society. Showing people the beauty of what stands in front of them.
My goals in doing this series was to become familiar with the lens and macro photography as a technique as well as to produce powerful, and dynamic images. I have really enjoyed using this lens and I am personally content with how the photos turned out. They were not what I has imagined, but the true result of experimentation of a technique and theme. Due to the unique, compelling results of macro photography, I definitely want to work further with this technique.
