Oxymoron; one of my favourite devices present in literature in poetry. There is a reason they appeal to me and add to a writers work, because presenting two opposite words side by side gives us a different perspective on the concept. They are meant to create a vivid image which makes the reader pause and consider the true meaning of what they just read. Given the challenge to photograph opposites this week I wanted to be able to do the same thing. Make my viewer pause and reflect on what they are seeing. The subject matter in each of my individuals images deals with opposites of restrained and free, alive and dead, destroy and create. My focus was towards looking at concepts and creating conceptual art. I felt that this gave me more room for expression and creative freedom. I wanted to reflect my thoughts in the work. In creating this work the series developed distinctive features and a cohesiveness, I kept similar angles and a dark backdrop to isolate the subject and give it the power to convey a message. I also applied dramatic lighting and composition choices to evoke mood. I feel that each image is powerful in conveying its own contrast. The one titled Limited freedom shows restriction through the tied arms but also shows freedom through the action of releasing butterflies. My second one, Living dead, is more literal in that it shows fresh, living flowers and dead ones. The composition was intended to make the viewer pause and view around the whole image. The final image, Creative destruction, required more planning and diving into the idea of symbolism. I hoped to convey a the concept of creation and destruction. I achieved that by showing art supplies, a tool for creative pursuit and a gun, a medium for death and destruction. My goal is that the contrast and juxtaposition is obvious to the viewer and makes them ponder on these topic. After all our world is full of contrast and disguise, it just takes a smart eye to see them.
