Black and White. Simple yet powerful.
It is amazing how an absence of colour can drastically transform a photo. What would have been rich, saturated colours become various shades, from the darkest blacks to the brightest whites. I find that there is a sense of depth that emerges from a photo when it is in black and white, with the colours removed the audience truly sees that subject in a raw, genuine light.
The Black and White series that I have completed is of my approach to architectural photography. I have found this form of photography to be captivating. The simple lines and clean edges make for such interesting compositions. Looking at my architectural photography work I noticed similar elements to the angle and style of composing the image. The photos were all taken from low angles against the brightness of the sky, to create a clean image that allows a viewer to focus on the buildings. Each one of the pictures I photographed have a unique pattern and look, however they are tied together by the constant use of sharp lines, patterns and similar angles.
The inspiration behind this black and white series is based of previous architectural work I have seen, but also by the building itself. Each building had a different pattern and energy to it. They each gave me different messages about the architecture of the building and the purpose of it. As the artist, the clean, desaturated lines and patterns create a simple composition that represents power. As towers that scrapes the sky, these building are intimidating and have strange beauty to them. My goal was to show this beauty in the architecture by simplifying it with a black and white palette.
In completing this assignment, I sparked an interest in architectural photography. I think that the power that comes from simple compositions and colours is something that will always be prevalent in my work.
