The numbing, winter wind howls outside while the fire crackles creating lasting warmth. The days become short and nights long, every moment spent without the worries of the world. The whole world is united for a celebration of light, joy, peace and warmth.
The holidays are a time that people look forward to, and to be able to photograph this time of the year, I felt that it was appropriate to capture the true essence of the holidays. To capture the atmosphere that evoke feelings of comfort and bliss. Keeping this goal in mind I thought it was best to photograph this time of the year through the small moments and details that make the end of the year so special.
I titled the series of images “The Small Moments” as each image is a close up shot of a detail that defines the Holiday seasons for me. The subject of each image brings to attention the fine aspects of the holiday that we all may not notice, however they play a big part to contributing to the mood. A cohesive technique I used throughout the series is to keep a shallow depth of field. This reinforces a viewer's focus to the detail I am capturing. I also used editing afterwards in some of the images to further create a difference between subject and the rest of the image.
The choices that I made subject wise for the photos were inspired by what I noticed around me. In most cases I took the image in the moment with no planning beforehand. My goal is that my compositions are able to represent the moods I was experiencing at the time, a mixture of awe and familiar comfort.
I feel that my future work may be impacted by the skills and techniques I practiced in applied in taking these pictures, such as taking pictures in the moment, experimenting with angles, getting close to the subject and effectively using depth of field.
