What is a window. It's a way to look at the world around us, or a way to look into the lives of people. Nothing more than a structure on a building, windows can be so much more. A window is timeless, and a connection between the outside world and the world within.
I approached this project with an open mind, the theme of windows was simple but opened so many possibilities. As I took on the challenge and experimented, I felt that I could use windows as a technique to create intriguing photos. In the final series I have three portraits that work together to tell a story. Each photo has a similar colour theme and overall mood. Using a window as a tangent in each image, I attempted to represent the idea of of being trapped. It is more than just a physical barrier, but also a longing for the world outside, out of your reach.
I took each of the photos by experimenting with angles, focus and using the window. I was able to achieve many varying products. Taking the photos looking into the window and looking out of the window, both gave me unique results and were techniques that I had not tried before. Although I experimented, I always kept my subject in mind. My decision to take portraits, was greatly inspired by the photographs I have taken this year. I have come to love taking portraits and using people in my photos. As I do with many of my photos, I incorporated a face to create a connection with the viewer and emphasis the story I am conveying. In the post-production stage, I kept editing to a minimum. I cropped the photo to create intimacy and power in the photographs and also interestingly made the decision to desaturate the photos. Even with the amount of black and white photography I do, I had yet to experiment with desaturated photographs that allowed me to keep the colour but also emphasis a more deep, somber mood.
As I took these photos I was also inspired by cinematic themes in photography. I felt that they are effective when trying to convey a story to the audience. Using a narrow depth of field and creating intimate shots was my way of replicating shots in movies and documentaries that focus in on details and make the finished product so much more captivating for the viewer.
As a photographer my goal was to create dynamic portraits, that used elements of cinematography and explicitly told a story to the audience. I believe that I was able to do this well and really incorporate all the ideas that I wanted to experiment with. As my last challenge for this year I can say that collectively, I learned a lot and really developed as a photographer. I am most proud in making my ideas a reality, in this assignment and in all of them, and really being able to convey the thoughts in my head through photography. Sometimes your ideas are trapped behind a glass, and every human longs to be able to express them.
