The brightest flame casts the darkest shadow.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings
Shadows are such wondrous things, and I was intrigued to use them as a subject. I was very interested by the mood I could create. I was also very keen in creating a story in my photos, I wanted them to mean something beyond a photo on a screen.
This image shows simple silhouettes where the subject is cut off. I think what makes these shadows so effective in the photo is the fact that they are the only thing present in a empty scene. I did this to draw attention to the dark silhouettes. Taking this image I did one thing I usually avoid, shooting directly toward a harsh light. This situation allowed me to pull from my experience and understand the lighting and exposure further. The composition was also important for this picture as it is a very minimal subject. I believe this placement draws the eyes to the dark shadows and also creates a sense of isolation. During the editing process I wanted to expand on the isolated feeling so I used contrast and level adjustments. I also chose to put it in grey scale as it removed details that we didn't need, whatever's important is in black and white. This photo presents a strong sense of shape, space, tone, contrast, and balance and taught me how these things affect your finished image.
